Hello,
Pettiness:
"Aides said Boxer and Robert Byrd of West Virginia plan to give long speeches opposing the nomination in an effort to extend the debate until 7 p.m., when the inaugural balls begin. The aides said Boxer and Byrd hope some GOP members will not want to stay and debate the nomination, and the vote will be pushed back until next week." (What's wrong, didn't get an invite or something?)
and Grandstanding:
""I choose to vote my concerns, not to overlook them. I choose to vote my gut, not custom," Kerry said during a committee meeting that preceded the vote." (You lost; get over it. Maybe try to go get a job in the real world to get back in touch with reality.)
The two staples of the 2005 Democratic minority.
When the nation calls for unity and bipartisanship, the far left fringe of the party, responsible for its crushing defeat in the last two presidential elections and congressional elections dating back to 1992, again rears its ugly head. My God, do these people make things easy. I would understand if this was a debate on something of substance, on a real issue that should be debated, IF they offer an alternative other than "Bush's plan will destroy the world" on any range of issues. But, why delay the inevitable, wasting the Senate's time in the process?! A handful of extemists holding the chamber hostage, when ALL of Bush's nominees for the past 4 years, whether for the cabinet or for judicial posts, have had more than enough votes in the full Senate for confirmation. Similar plans are in the works for Gonzales and other nominees. At this rate, it will be January 2006, and we will still be deciding the makeup of the cabinet. The judges, the cabinet nominees...held up for no reason other than these lunatics attempting to do everything in their power to make sure that this Administration fails.
Where's the NAACP, by the way? Where are the Latino groups? If Rice and Gonzales were Clinton nominees receiving the same treatment from Republicans, it would be labeled as racism and sexism and everything in between. Put Trent Lott in the place of Barbara Boxer, and it would be a rich, white southerner beating up on a defenseless, oppressed African American woman. Algore would be running the Latino circuit, trying to speak Spanish, taking about how the evil Republicans are trying to keep them down by attacking a pillar of their community like Roberto Gonzales.
I say, keep it up! Howard Dean for DNC Chair! Keep showing your true colors, and keep drifting away from the foundations Clinton set which gave the Democrat Party the potential to gain and maintain a ruling majority. Keep outspending the Republicans by hundreds of millions of dollars each election cycle...cement your position as the party of big money...and keep losing in the process! Hell, you don't have to blame yourselves! You can just blame the rest of the country for being stupid rednecks...seems to work in elitist cirlcles, and the Europeans like it. Just please, please don't allow the moderate forces within your party to take over and give the party a reality check. Don't allow them to take control of the agenda and put real issues before the Congress. If you did, you would be in danger of fullfilling your responsibility as the minority party, because we certainly don't need an opposition party to keep the majority honest. We need all of this pettiness and divisiveness instead.
